The Fort FamilyWelcome to our World!!
Monday 6th OctoberThis morning was the last session in my course "Starting School". I will really miss it as I have learnt such a lot and enjoyed working with the group. I also received today the application pack or rather tome. By all accounts, this has significantly increased from the previous years' which is hard to imagine, bearing in mind the need or demand that councils place on being "green". I have to question about whether such a hefty, glossy book is really required - watch this space for an update once I've read it (probably 6 months time!).
I was thrilled on Saturday to receive an anonymous gift through the post. It was a double CD of some great 80s tracks so is a definate hit in our house - thank you, you know who you are! Accompanying the CD was a card from this site - I really love the idea of it, more people should do random acts of kindness (I quite like the new Impulse tv ad which seems to be along the same lines).
Fingers crossed tonight we have the staircase gentleman coming to quote - just the fact he's coming has made me feel optimistic about getting on with moving bedrooms! Tuesday 30th SeptemberWe've had a wonderful week! Last Monday we attended the Nidderdale Show that we'd been helping Peter prepare. It was a fantastic day and the girls behaved very well considering how tired they were!! Sadly the weather we enjoyed on the Sunday and the Tuesday after the show didn't bless us on the actual day but regardless people enjoyed it and turned up!! I was kicked and then stood on by a Highland Cow which was very, very painful to say the least but I was brave (it's amazing how "brave" you become when you've two little faces looking worryingly at you!!).
On Tuesday morning, I dropped the girls off at Playgroup and headed back to the showground to help with the clear-up operation. It's amazing really that it takes a week for all the preparations, marquee erection, electrical cable installation, pens etc yet only a day to remove virtually every trace of the show and allow the sheep to once again graze!!
I picked up the girls, we enjoyed lunch and got busy packing our holdalls for our few days away with Peter in Scotland - I cannot express how much I was looking forward to the trip!! We left the house a little later than expected but enjoyed a pleasant drive Northward to Ayr where we spent our first night. I can recommend Premier TravelInn for anyone travelling with young children - they not only put up but actually made up with blankets a travelcot for Martha and the sofabed for Lauren. It's amazing how much space you have when you don't need to bring along travel cots and bedding!! My only improvement for when we do it again (I gave this advice to my sister but stupidly forgot to apply it to myself!), is to pack daily (well 24hr) packs in carrier bags so we only need to talk a couple of small bags in at each location. It's hard work carrying heavy holdalls whilst trying to make sure your children aren't getting trapped in doors or running away!! One other advantage about staying in Premier Travel Inns is that each room is virtually the same, the first night away, the girls were very excitable in the "new" room however come the third night they seemed to have become used to the layout and the novelty wore off meaning we got better and better sleep each night.
After Peter did his work in Ayr, we drove further NorthEast towards Perth, Stirling and St Andrews. After his jobs, we took a break to visit the beautiful beach overlooking RAF Leuchars airstrip where not only did we take in the most stunningly sandy beach but also were thrilled to see numerous fighter jets take off and train! We're so used to seeing them flying so fast over our house that it was great to see them at lower speed.
Whilst Peter did his work, the girls and I ventured around the various shopping centres and precincts. I tried to purchase some boots for Martha and nice shoes for Lauren. I took them to Clarks to get their feet measured and Lauren was hFappy when she was allowed to get her feet measured on the "big girl" machine!! They are now size 10G and 6F. I couldn't justify the cost of the boots in Clarks for Martha and unfortunately, as I seemed to encounter throughout the trip, I struggled to find any shoes to fit Lauren that weren't school shoes, trainers, boots or party shoes. Sadly, Lauren didn't get her much needed sensible, but not school shoes but Martha is now sporting a lovely pair of boots from Barretts for the relatively cheap price of £18 - compared to Clarks £36!
The highlights of the trip has to have been seeing my sister Laura and her boyfriend for dinner one night and the next morning, my elder sister, Jan and my lovely nieces. It feels like such a long time since I've seen and really spent time with them - I knew I missed them all but don't think I realised how much until I saw them!
Jan and I had a very happy trip to Lidl - I LOVE that shop and can't wait until the one near me opens!! Jan very kindly bought me some spring bulbs and a french manicure kit that I can't wait to plant, I've picked out the perfect places!! Thank you Jan!! I was disappointed to come home a bit earlier than I expected but was so glad that we were there and better still that the trip wasn't (or didn't seem to be) as tortuous as Peter anticipated, hopefully leading the way for future and more regular trips!!
Yesterday I attended the penultimate session of "Getting your child ready for school". I am really enjoying the sessions and will be sad at next weeks, however they have been fantastic at showing me a) how much the schooling system has changed and b) how I can really help Lauren with this bonus year at home we have. She is really keen to learn to read her books herself at bedtime, and whilst I know that I will be very unlikely to achieve this, I can at least start to get her used to the language used to teach at school and hopefully give her a headstart if she wishes. Friday 19th SeptemberI am soooooo tired. I was alright until about an hour ago when I suddenly came over very sleepy - it's probably because I actually sat down with a coffee as opposed to the walking about outside with one I have been doing the last couple of days!!! Anyway, it's been busy, busy, busy with a couple of big decisions thrown in. The biggest one I have made is that I have decided to temporarily resign from my voluntary job at www.asylumcam.com. When the girls returned to playgroup a couple of weeks ago, it dawned on me that had Lauren been born 2 days earlier I would actually be taking her to school now instead of playgroup. I have decided that I really have a bonus year of having Lauren at home so I want to do as many things together as possible such as teaching the girls to swim, taking them swimming, on day trips and generally just enjoying the free time that I have with them. My neighbour is a swimming teacher and has kindly offered to accompany the girls and I which is wonderful and I am so grateful. The waiting list for swimming lessons is not only massive but also expensive so this is a wonderful opportunity.
I have decided to bring some colour into our gardens too. There is so much land and it's all very green, brown and lush but is lacking in colour. I have worked out a planting list, scheme and plan as to how to achieve it, I just now need to get on with it!!
We've been really busy that last couple of days helping Peter get ready for the annual Nidderdale Show. It's an exciting time of the year around here and marks the end of the agricultural show season and the start of Harvest. I have my fingers crossed that the weather will be favourable this year!!
I stumbled across this inspirational news story. I now just need to source a sewing machine and off I go!! I love the idea of approaching strangers and giving them something and hopefully making their day a bit brighter and the World a bit greener!! Here is the link to the official site. Tuesday 2nd SeptemberThe girls returned to playgroup today and it's good that not only has it fallen on Lauren's Birthday, but also one of the 2 mornings that Martha attends with Lauren. Lauren entered the hall armed with a party cake that she requested to be shared with her playgroup friends and everybody greeted her with "happy birthday" and a few cards as she walked in - she was thrilled.
At lunchtime, her best friend Emma, who started school today, came up with her sister to help Lauren celebrate by having a party lunch. They all really enjoyed it and Lauren's highlight of the day is expected to be the attendance at her ballet class as she is now up to the next class and learning "proper" ballet (according to Lauren!).
I'll update the rest of the day as it happens!!
Tuesday 19th August19th August, I can't believe it! It only seems like a week or so ago that the girls finished up playgroup for Summer yet it seems like an eternity since Peter and I celebrated our wedding anniversary which was only the day after, doesn't the mind do funny things!!
I've hardly blogged recently, for those that want the lovely story (and also very fictitious, please read on, if you want the honest, warts and all truth scroll to bottom!).
We've been so busy having fun in the wonderful Summer sun. We've had an exciting trip somewhere or an activity to do each day. The girls have behaved wonderfully and I wish we had another 7 weeks break together! The house is wonderfully tidy and all the laundry is both washed, iron and most importantly, put away - hurrah!!
It's been a very crappy week or so, the girls have been fighting and if one of them behaves, the other one starts antagonising the other so the fighting starts. The times (and there have been a lot!) where I've given them my undivided attention and we've done something that they enjoy like playdough, baking, reading stories, being outside etc, they are good for the duration but as soon as we stop and I dare go and do something else, like make a coffee, go to the loo, quickly check emails etc they revert back to misbehaving, it's been very frustrating and upsetting. The weather has been awful as well, it feels as though we've by-passed Summer and gone from Spring straight to a mild Autumn! I think that has contributed to the mood this week. I find it hard to be inside all day and NOT tidy or do jobs that need doing. If it's just drizzle, I really try to get the girls outside (there was a gap in the downpours around 1530-1700 today so I got the girls and myself wet-weather proofed and took them out for a walk down the lane and spent some time with a neighbour which was nice) but it's been so wild that it really hasn't been possible.
I have really loved having the girls at home with me (honestly!) and not being constrained by others' schedules, however I am looking forward now to the start of term when I hope the regular routine will help bring order back to our/my life! On a very, very positive note, I would like to express my pride in Martha. She has now been out of nappies (excluding night-time) for a week and has spent the last 2 days accident free!! I am so proud of her achievement, I just need to try now to get her to a) put her pants on and b) stop undressing completely each time she uses the loo!! Wednesday 6th AugustI was upset yesterday to learn of the death of Craig Jones at Brands Hatch. Not only was he so young at 23, but incredibly talented and a really nice person. The motorsport world has lost a lot of its members over the past few years, it's so sad when I hear of yet another loss. R.I.P Jonesy, you will be missed.
Tuesday 5th AugustToday we picked up my friend Kath and took the girls to visit the nearby village of Ripley. Ripley is a very olde worldly little place with beautiful cottages, stonework, Church, castle and inn, not to mention one of the best ice-cream shops in the world!! I didn't check beforehand (which as a bit silly of me!) so we discovered that Ripley Farmyard was closed, however we headed straight for the tearoom where we ordered toasted teacakes, scones, hot chocolates, coffee and apple juice. Martha spent most of the time wandering around the table or playing with the tablecloths, whilst Lauren sat very well and enjoyed the treat. Afterwards, we went into the gift shop and as it was pouring down, I was reminded that Lauren needed some new wellies which we promptly purchased along with some white musk incense sticks, holder, dog finger puppet fcr Martha and some Ladybird books for their ever expanding library.
Martha loves books and is now in a bedtime routine of storytime with myself, teeth, then, storytime alone in bed with lamp. She normally falls asleep within 30 minutes and she really enjoys the quiet time. Sunday 3rd AugustWe had quite a lazy Sunday and it was wonderful to be able to join Jan, Nigel, Emily, Lucy & Georgie in York for the Ghost Trail of York! The girls enjoyed seeing their cousins too which was lovely. Martha spent most of the tour either being chased, chasing or undoing Jan's shoelaces! I'm going to make an effort to get the girls out some more in public in an effort to acclimatise them to the situation!!
Wednesday 23rd JulyWowee!! It has been a wonderfully warm day today! I went to bed on Tuesday night full of ideas as to how to spend this morning, however when the girls behaviour was just awful from second one, I suddenly found I had no motivation to take them outside the perimeter fence! So far the first 3 days of summer holiday have been very demanding, how I will cope for the next few weeks I don't know!! The afternoon took a very pleasant turn firstly with a lovely telephone conversation with my sister Jan (thank you Jan!) and secondly the earlier than expected homecoming of Peter!! After dinner we took a stroll down the lane to see the wheat fields which are just starting to turn from greeny/yellow to the beautiful golden colour that to me represents Summer. The only thing missing around here is the fields upon fields of Oil Seed Rape that I remember so fondly from childhood, to this day I adore the smell and am instantly transported back to the school holidays (oh and the water, that I really do miss!)!
Peter's parents made an albeit brief appearance on last nights "The F Word" and it was very funny to see a large number of familiar faces on my television! I occasionally shop in sync with Janet Street-Porter (Pateley Bridge is very small and people tend to work from top of the high street down so synchronicity is inevitable, I'm not a stalker, honest!!) and she always appears really pleasant, natural, and polite - I don't know why people have such problems with her, I personally prefer to see people in a natural environment than believe what is portayed on the media.
I'm having great problems with my hair at the moment. Much to Peter's delight, my attempts are DIY hair colour have gone and I'm back to my own colour, however it's just not sitting properly 100% of the time, some days it looks really good without any effort then others I look like a nutcase (or nutty professsor I guess!) - is it my hairs way of telling me it needs cuts, if the girls mops are anything to go by, the answer is we all need to get shorn! Monday 21 JulyI am so easily pleased!! At the weekend, we decided to take a trip to Focus DIY with a view of seeing what multipacks of plants they had in stock so I could plant up some containers in advance of Peter's parents party this coming weekend. Sadly, their offerings were feeble to say the least, whilst there, we noticed a wooden garden set which was considerably reduced from £200 to £89, the best bit of it, is that not only do two of the sides fold up/down, the chairs sit underneath when not in use, so really space saving for use on our veranda! We also purchased a lidded square kettle BBQ which we've used a couple of times already! I was tasked with the assembly of it all, which I don't mind at all. I did the usual, glance at the instructions, determine "it doesn't look too hard!" and off I went. I had to call on assistance a couple of times when I couldn't get the wheel support bar to go through the holes and when I couldn't work out Peter's fancy spanner/socket set!! I had all but completed it when I realised I only had one wheel - slight problem!! Peter went off to see if we had a suitable replacement whilst I set about putting the table together which was quite simple. I took the table out of the box and an edge (hmmm, it's circular with 2 hinged sides, so I'm not sure if it's called an edge or not) was snapped off (not the hinged one either). I was so disappointed, a missing wheel we could get around but a broken table, no way. We packed it back into the car and drove back which is about 25 minutes to exchange it. Thankfully we got there about 15 minutes before it closed and not only got the table replaced but now have the second BBQ wheel too! I cannot tell you how wonderful it feels to be able to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine and pleasant evenings in comfort - as I said, I am easily pleased!!
Other news this week is for our anniversary, Peter arranged for our joiner (who built our house) to come this Friday to measure up/schedule getting our upstairs (phase two) underway! Well I guess as 5th Anniversary is paper, I think Peter is thinking of spending some!! It really will make such a difference to not only our daily lives but we'll be able to easily accommodate guests!! Thursday 17th JulyI am really struggling to keep my blog updated at the moment, it's either a sign that we're having too much fun, I'm too tired or have lost motivation. I'd like to think it's a combination of the first two and I will try harder during the Summer holidays - perhaps shortening my entries would help hahaha!! Martha has now started at playgroup and seems to be enjoying it greatly (as does Lauren!). Lauren has really settled down again now that Martha is with her, even on the 3 days that she doesn't have Martha joining her. Last Thursday we accompanied Peter to work whilst he serviced a site in Blackpool. We were really blessed to have wonderful weather and Martha had a great time stripping off and running full throttle into the sea! thankfully Peter was there to ensure she didn't reach Ireland!! Lauren had a great time playing in the sand and it was so lovely to see them enjoying the water - it makes me homesick though and really miss the luxury of living near the water. We had a Tesco.com home delivery and I will jump up and down to say it was the best service ever - I have had such bad service in the past, this was fantastic to see such an improvement. This was the first time in all the years I've used online grocery shopping that the driver has actually asked where I'd like it delivered and once he'd delivered it to the kitchen he even helped unpack things!! Also, before my timeslot, I received a call from the Call Centre saying that my driver was running a bit late (by about 10 minutes) which I thought was very proactive!
Sunday 6th JulyOh dear! It's been a looong time since my last entry. Julie's visit with the twins have been and gone along with Martha's 2nd birthday party. She had a wonderful time even although the teddy bears picnic had to be held indoors not due to rain itself but rather the fact that the grass was too wet for people to sit/walk on. It was very exciting to re-configure the lounge to hold all the guests and their parents - it was like a glimpse into the hopefully not too far off future when we have our second building phase completed!! Peter did a great job of being part party-host whilst I organised upcoming events and generally felt a lot less stressed than at our previous parties - perhaps that's the way forward!! Everyone appeared to have a great time and left fed, smiling and eager to come back! Martha received some wonderful gifts (thank you so much!) and we've all enjoyed playing with them. Jan and family sent the coolest craft thing ever...Wikki Stix. If you can imagine string dipped in all different colours of wax, then cut into 15cm/8cm lengths. They can be used to make pictures or moulded to make models but best of all...NO MESS!!! It's great seeing Martha being creative with no constraints! She also received a bubble machine which the girls both love and in the couple of sunny days we've had since her birthday we've had it out. She also received a couple of lovely (and brilliantly matching!) teasets which are used on a daily, if not hourly, basis!! The last week has been hard work as Peter was working away again, I guess I'm lucky that he's on the other end of the phone so I can at least get virtual support when things are fraught, some people don't have that option, nevertheless I was very glad to have him back home on Friday safe and sound. The biggest news of the last week was Martha's commencement at Playgroup. I have decided, for the remaining couple of weeks of term, to enrol Martha on a Tuesday and Wednesday morning. My rationale for that is she is getting two days together to get to know how it works before the long summer break. There are going to be so many new starters in September that I think her having a slight head start will be easier not just for her but the staff as well. On her first day she bit a ball and broke it, the second she ripped a key off the new laptop - oh dear!! I guess that's to be expected and thankfully playgroup were really kind about it as I felt so awful. She's never had anyone else in charge of her, giving her directions etc and I think that she's found that more difficult than I imagined she would. I'm very pleased that Lauren is there with her, as she listens and copies everything Lauren does and Lauren in turn is very proud to be the "helpful big sister" and I've noticed such a change in Lauren this last week whilst dropping them off. Since returning after Easter break, Lauren has been very clingy and cries each time I leave her yet as soon as I go, staff tell me that she is perfectly fine and the crying stopped instantly. Now, even when I leave just Lauren at playgroup (Mon, Thurs & Fri) she gives me a kiss and hug declaring "I'll see you soon Mummy, have a lovely morning!" I think this is as we had a chat about Martha seeing Lauren being sad and Martha getting upset and not wanting to stay at Playgroup - whatever, it's great to see her being back to normal. My friend Kath came up to visit us on Monday following her long 6 week holiday in Florida. We've all missed her a lot and it was lovely to see her and for her to join us for lunch. She bought the girls a lovely gift each, Perfect Petzzz, Lauren has a Shih Tzu and Martha a King Charles Spaniel, both in very cute (and robust!) carry cases (not like the cardboard cases on the site!). They are so lifelike that even Peter was fooled when he saw them "asleep" in the hall! Today was spent at the local Fun Day which as last year, was sadly taking place in torrential rain but the playgroup stall made over £30 doing a 50p a go "everyone a winner" game, which is great news. We then decided to go out for dinner and we had a lovely meal whilst sheltering from the thunderstorm! Thursday 26th JunePhew! This has been a busy and challenging week!! My sister Julie arrived on Saturday evening with her twin girls Hollie and Hannah. It's great to see them, the girls are growing up so fast and it's lovely to watch them play with Lauren & Martha. They stayed for two nights before departing to head up to Edinburgh to visit our other sisters. At approximately 2330hrs on Sunday night I had to call the Out of Hours Doctors as Lauren had developed blisters on her tongue and mouth. Earlier that day, I noticed that Martha had a little, what I suspected to be, coldsore in the corner of her mouth. I was told that they'd picked up a common little virus called Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (it really needs a name overhaul!). It's quite mild compared to other childhood bugs but the girls had sore mouths for a couple of days which was relieved, much to their delight, by icepops and Calpol! As there were no trips out of the house to playgroup, I managed to get the house fairly straight in preparation of Martha's Birthday Party on Saturday. I had hoped that we could be outside but it looks like the weather is not going to be favourable and if it is, the ground is likely to be too wet to have a picnic. Hopefully we can get some outside time in the woods to do the "bear hunt" though. I have spent the last 2 days (about 5 hours) decorating Martha's birthday cake - I've uploaded the photos to the June album. Peter's colleague and his wife are up here for a weeks holiday, staying in a self-catering cottage just outside of Pateley Bridge. They've been up to visit on a couple of evenings which has been nice as they are good company - babysitting provided, Peter & I are going out for a meal with them tonight before they head home tomorrow. I'm pleased that my growing out fringe is getting a bit longer which means I can pin it back now - I hope I've got through the hair pain barrier!!! Thursday 19th JuneCenter Parcs has sadly been and gone. We had a wonderful time and will definately go back. My friend Alison is a seasoned Center Parcer and gave some really good hints for us. We aimed to get there for 1400hrs but due to traffic, my attendance on a course that morning and generally having a leisurely drive we ended up arriving at 1445. We were really impressed with the checking in procedure - we had expected chaos but we had to queue in our car for about 10 minutes then we entered what I can only describe as what looked like a big car wash!! A checking in lady asked for our booking number and in turn handed us maps, keys, vehicle sticker and information leaflets - it was all so calm and professional. We then made our way into the huge car park where we had to wait until 1500/1530 for the gate to open and we could drive to our lodge - had we arrived earlier, we could have left our car and spend some time swimming etc before we accessed our lodge. We got everything unpacked and determined on our map the best parking space for Peter to return the vehicle to (about a 3 minute cycle away!). The lodge itself was very much a home from home with the exception that it was like what our house will be when we get our upstairs completed! The girls had their own rooms which Lauren loved asking any time she left the lodge or bathroom, "did Martha go into my room?"!! Peter & I slept in a room downstairs that had a hydrobath which was fab, with the girls having their own bathroom upstairs. The wildlife around the lodge was abundant although far tamer than what we're used to at home!! We had a lovely big dining table inside and outside a 6 seat patio set and BBQ.
The first night (Monday) we ate in having pizzas and garlic bread and settled the girls to bed. Martha slept like a dream the entire time although Lauren had a bit more trouble and stayed up a lot later than she would do normally, however the seperate rooms meant that neither were disturbing the other so it all worked out well. On Tuesday night we had a BBQ which was lovely although I seem to have become very attractive to midges and ended up being bitten through the whole break!! We ate out Wednesday and Thursday and the restaurants were really nice and competitively priced. The best parts of the breaks were the cycling and swimming. Lauren is now able to confidently ride her bike everywhere and Martha loves being on the back in her little seat. The Subtropical Swimming Paradise was great although busy, they had a graduated section that when the wave machine started really looked like the beach! There was a baby/toddler section complete with 2 slides which Martha adored, she showed no fear much to our delight and nerves when she kept running around to take another go on the slide! Lauren's confidence has improved and we're going to take this swimming this afternoon in our local pool to try to keep their confidence levels up. There were lots of adventure playgrounds that the girls enjoyed and the cycling was something all four of us had great fun with and hope to keep it up now we're back home.
I'd definately go back to Center Parcs although I wouldn't pay full price for it as I think it makes it too expensive for what it is really.
I've put the photos in the June album! Thursday 5th JuneOfficially I think that this has been the longest time between blog entries since I started - my apologies but as you may have gathered from the previous entry things have been pretty stretched around here!
Martha is still sleeping in the big bed but we've had issues with her not settling without one of us (usually me!) sitting next to her bed preventing her from getting out and pestering Lauren. Last night I tried again to settle Martha then once she was asleep letting Lauren go to bed which means bedtime is earlier for Martha than usual but I am not still settling them gone 2030hrs which is a killer as I end up being so tired and don't get my evening jobs done. They were both asleep by 1930 last night which was great and better still they stayed asleep until 0755!! That must be a record!!
Last week I booked us to go to Center Parcs for 4 nights at a really cheap price. When I looked up prices a few weeks ago (Peter's booked 2 weeks holiday) the prices were nearly £1000, I can neither justify nor afford those prices, so was thrilled when last week I was feeling a bit down in the dumps, I received an email from them saying 4 nights w/c 9th June from £227. It was one of those things where you go on expecting not to get that offer but I managed to get an Executive Detached 3 Bed Lodge for £259 - I'm really excited! We need to hire a bike and kiddie trailer for Peter & Martha, Lauren is deciding whether to take her trike or master her bicycle (which needs new stabilisers) and I need to get my mountain bike out of the shed and serviced/spruced up - I bought a couple puncture repair kits so there's nothing stopping me now!
I'm trying to think about what else has happened since my last entry - we've now got fencing up in the garden which is also (since last night) secondary fenced to stop Martha climbing through the gaps and escaping! (I've just been distracted whilst writing this by Martha banging on the front door - she's managed to get through the secondary fencing barrier!!).
We've finally decided to get the girls Christened. We've chosen our Godparents as our friends Susan & Martin and my very good friend Julie. They were all thrilled with the request, we now just need to get a date booked with Matthew, our Vicar.
Lauren, Martha and I discussed Martha's birthday party and have agreed upon a theme "Teddy Bears Picnic" I am now busy organising this and so far have chosen the games but am now on the lookout for anything teddy related for the party bags, they're only 2 years olds so I think stickers, colouring sheets (I can print these off), little pencils, bubbles etc will be fine.
The website I moderate/report for www.asylumcam.com has started its own weekly radio show which is exciting, unfortunately due the time difference I cannot listen live (it airs Tuesdays at 0300h BST), however the site has a gadget where you can hear the show the next day.
We've started a lot of work getting outside straightened up. Peter has started building the retaining wall for my rockery. We've put some soil into the bed I made months ago and the girls & I planted flower seeds a week ago that are already shooting!
Tuesday 13th MayWe decided to move Martha from her cot into a toddler bed over the weekend and it's still not going brilliantly so far. Last night we popped her back into her travel cot and both she and Lauren fell asleep instantly! Today I had a brainwave!! I asked Peter to get down one of the sides from her old cot which I placed on the floor between her new bed and the wall, she has a folding bedguard at the open side and I think the combination now means that she feels more secure. I was overjoyed when at her morning naptime she climbed into bed and fell straight to sleep more or less (without fuss anyway!). Tonight I held her hand for a couple of minutes and she again fell straight to sleep, I really feel like we've turned a corner! Well Done Martha!!!!! Monday 12th MayPeter was called out to a job in Edinburgh today and invited the girls and I along so I could spend a few hours with my sister and lovely nieces - it's been sooooo long since I've seen them all and miss them a lot. We arrived at lunchtime and enjoyed a yummy lunch of pizzas and Mr Kipling cakes. After an initial spell of shyness the girls (mine!) started to play with their cousins really nicely and it was lovely to see. Jan gave them all treasure boxes and they explored the garden collecting bits and bobs for their box, Georgie and Lucy collected a wide variety of interesting things, Lauren favoured mini disco ball baubles and Martha twigs! I was really happy to see Emily when she returned from school as Peter didn't think we would due to the job expecting to be finished quicker than it was so bad news for Peter but great news for us!!! Unfortunately for Nigel he had toothache and came home from work early but this meant that we saw him too, albeit understandbly fleeting, poor Nigel. It was a lovely, lovely afternoon and we all had a great time seeing Jan, Nigel and the girls and really hope that it won't be as long in future. It's definately something I'm going to get the girls to do back home as Peter has now erected some fencing for us (thank you so much!!) meaning the girls can now play outside in the garden and be enclosed rather than wandering off into the quarry, future pond/lake, badger setts or rabbit warrens! I've uploaded some new photos of our trip into the May album. Friday 9th MayAnyone reading this in the UK will realise why I've not been blogging so much!! The weather has been stunning, it's strange though it's as if we've gone from Winter to Summer and by-passed Spring - this last week we've had no rain and daily temperatures of around 25C!! We've been outside as much as possible including early evening walks with the girls after dinner, this however seems to have taken a toll on the girls who today are fairly grumpy I think it's all the sun, fresh air and exercise! Since my last blog entry, we've:-
but, best of all...
I now have 4 sets of prints approximately 6 months apart and it's wonderful to see the changes in both girls over that time.
Monday 28th AprilHurrah! This morning I woke up feeling perfectly normal, it's as if the last few days were just a nightmare but thankfully I still have the weight loss to show for it!! To celebrate my new found wellbeing (okay, slight exaggeration, I'm still a bit tired having not eaten properly for 4 days) I busied myself baking impromptu fairy cakes which promptly got eaten by Peter and the girls, toad in the hole for dinner (is there anyone who doesn't like Yorkshire pudding?!) followed by homemade chocolate sponge pudding - we're all pudding'd out!!!
Lauren came home from playgroup at lunchtime with her face painted like a cat. She's never had her face painted before as I was always concerned it would fire off her excema but touch wood it's ok. She didn't want to wash off her whiskers at bedtime and tried to eat her dinner like a cat - it didn't go down well at the dinner table! She looked really cute and was lovely to see. I've added a photo in the April Album.
I am having a hair crisis at the moment. Peter thinks I should grow it again, I like the ease of it being short but like the feel of it being a bit longer so have to decide whether I can break through the awful half way hair barrier - time will tell! Saturday 26th AprilYuk! I spent the whole of yesterday in bed. Thankfully Peter arrived back home on Thursday night otherwise I'm not sure how I would have coped. It's not often that I stay in bed but I could hardly move and felt so, so bad. Today I feel a better but still not 100% but there is a bonus, I've managed to lose over 5lbs!! Big thank you to my friend Julie who took Lauren to her ballet class! My morning was also brightened when the postman delivered my new freebie jute shopping bag from Which? in support of their Kid's Food Campaign. I can't wait to use it to collect my fresh fruit and veg (plus it's got properly padded handles so is really comfortable and strong!). Wednesday 23rd AprilThe last fortnight has been a bit of a blur. We seem to have done loads of things but when and exactly what I am not 100% sure of!! Last week we spent a lot of time outdoors doing jobs like felling trees and cleaning vehicles. This week has been hard as Peter has been away all week again, however the girls have been behaving themselves which has made it a lot more pleasant. Today we had a lovely morning with my friend Natalie and her son Zak (he's a few months younger than Martha). We met up at Hesketh Farm Park and although the weather was drizzly, it was mild with little wind. The first big event of the morning was feeding the lambs. Everyone sat in a square on hay bales armed with feeding bottles. The staff had advised us that the lambs come rushing out so don't get a fright. When they opened the pen, true to their word, they came flying out and about 4 made a beeline for us as we were sat right opposite the pen! Lauren and Martha were really calm and didn't get scared at all, Martha actually started going to them (she was so excited!), Lauren just followed the instructions as to how to feed them and got on with it giggling all the time. After feeding was over (about 1 minute!)Martha helped collect all the bottles from everyone in the group and put them away (she's very tidy!) and then tried to pick a lamb up! Afterwards, we saw some pigs and to Lauren's delight piglets which were gorgeous. We then went to see some guinea pigs and rabbits and again the girls enjoyed holding and stroking them all. There were lovely chicks that made them both laugh and tadpoles which I haven't seen for years. We then went outside again and saw the donkeys, goats and more lambs. They had a chicken run and Lauren & I went to collect eggs whilst Martha played on some ride-on tractors with Natalie and Zak. Peter has been talking about getting some hens and I think if they had the set-up here that they had at the Farm, I'd be happy to have them, I just don't want too many as I know that I'd end up looking after them all the time, it would be nice to have some fresh eggs though and I could even sell some at the end of the lane (our main road lane is one of the few that doesn't have eggs for sale along it, so it might be an opportunity!!). After lunch, we played for a bit longer and as both Martha and Zak were getting tired we decided to go home. The girls bought a mask each, Martha a sheep, Lauren a cow (she's not taken it off very much!). Tonight I spent the evening sewing elastic onto Lauren's ballet shoes which took me longer than the 10 minutes I thought it would!! I watched The Apprentice and was annoyed when Claire was in the winning team, I wanted her to go this week, she just seems (or at least is edited to appear so) so vindictive and smug grrrrr! I've updated the April Photo Album finally! Sunday 13 AprilThank you for my lovely birthday cards and gifts!! They are all so nice, I feel spoilt!!
I was awoken this morning with coffee and breakfast in bed and serenaded to with "Happy Birthday to You" from Lauren, Martha and Peter. The girls sat with me in bed whilst I opened the cards and gifts - Martha was very funny and each item I picked up she'd squeal "ooooh"! Peter's mum came over as we were leaving for Church with some sad news that Great (Great) Auntie Joyce passed away during the night. She'd been fighting cancer for about the last year so it wasn't sudden as such but still sad all the same - we shall all miss her enormously.
Lauren and I came home from Church and the girls and Peter played outside in between the rainstorms whilst I played on the computer and tidied up (very exciting!!). When they came in, Lauren ordered me to wait in the bedroom whilst she did some decorating with Peter's help. I was called through and Lauren had organised for the lounge ceiling to be decorated with hanging spirals - it was really lovely and was probably the highlight of my day. After the girls had dinner, I bathed them and we enjoyed getting ready for bed together blowdrying both their hair and pretending to be at the hairdressers. Peter went out to collect an Indian takeaway which we've just enjoyed and I'm now feeling full - but not too full as to not enjoy some of the fab gift from Laura and Kev from here!!!!
Playgroup starts again tomorrow so I hope that the return to the regular routine will be a blessing for us all - these last 3 weeks have been hard work - goodness knows how I'll cope in Summer!!! | ||||||||||||
