Monday 18th December - Wednesday 27th December

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Been a typical busy December for us all.  I always want the house really clean and tidy at Christmas for unexpected guests (and the expected ones!!), so up until Christmas Eve, we were all tidying up the house and making it all festive.

Unfortunately Peter had to work in the Isle of Man from the 19th to 22nd so he missed out on some of the build up.  Lauren & I spent a lot of time making mince pies, biscuits and decorating the Christmas cake.

I think a lot of people haven't sent cards this year as we have filled 1 of our 2 card holders whereas last year we had them both nearly full - what a difference a year makes!!

Quick update on the doomed PC front, it FINALLY arrived, however our jubilation soon turned to dispair when we opened it to discover screws missing, graphics cards fallen out, hard drive half out - needless to say, it was returned and we have been refunded in full.  Tonight, Peter has bought the components that are needed and is going to built it himself.

Back to happier things, Lauren, Martha and I had a nice surprise on Thursday when Peter's friend, Mark arrived (from Peterborough) unexpectedly, he picked Peter up from the airport as a surprise and stayed with us overnight.  On Friday, Peter, Mark and a lot of the self-employed lads went karting in Colne and had a great time, only to be spoiled by Peter being called out to Blackpool, although some investigating by Peter meant that he didn't need to be there until 2000hrs so he was able to go on and enjoy the Christmas carvery as planned.

Later on Friday, we received our Christmas Box from the butcher where Peter nearly keeled over after discovering he'd ordered £40 topside beef!!  We are certainly going to enjoy that meal!!!!

On Saturday, Lauren & Martha were very poorly with the cold (that would soon inflict Peter & I) so Peter went into Pateley to collect our veg/deli box from Elliott.  It was a very exciting morning to see all the lovely produce for us to eat.

On Sunday, Mum & Alan arrived in the afternoon and Lauren was very excited when "Santa" arrived at the door.  Mum and I laid the table ready for the main event and it looked stunning.  It is still set the same, I can't bear to take it down yet!  We prepared everything for the feast and I slept well knowing that it was all ready to roll in the morning.

Peter & I both developed the full blown cold and as Peter sloped off to bed, Mum & I set the scene for the next morning.  We all crawled into our beds at 0130 whacked!!

Lauren awoke just after 0700 and the first words to come out were "Santa" and "Cheerios", Lauren & crept into the lounge where she was greeted by mountains of presents.  She was speechless for a  few moments and then very excited.  We received some wonderful presents from everyone, thank you all so much!  Jan, I love my books, I shall never again say I don't know what to do!!  Lauren was over the moon when she opened up some new wellies (thank you Grandma) and her first umbrella (Thank you Barker family!) - at this point, we discovered Peter was superstitious about open umbrellas - whoops!!!  There are so many wonderful presents, I can't list them all but needless to say, this has to be one of the most exciting and happiest Christmases we've had.

Our Christmas dinner was wonderful. It lasted over 4 hours and we managed 4 of the 6 courses which was good going!!!  Peter's parents had a good time and it was nice to entertain in our house for once!

Boxing Day was spent wrapped up and sneezing as we continued to fight our rotten colds.  We snacked most of the day eating leftover Christmas dinner, mini Christmas Pudding balls and marzipan fruits.

Mum and Alan left this morning, so we've spent the rest of the day winding down from our host role and generally relaxing with the girls, which has been lovely.

Take a deep breath - Hogmanay's round the corner!!!!!

Sunday 17th December

Saw an ad in the "Weekend" section of local paper advertising "Santa's Grotto" at the beautiful Swinton Park.  Knowing that this would be the last opportunity for Lauren to see him before the "Big Day", we set off about an hour after opening to miss the initial rush - little did we know what delights would be in store for us!!!

We arrived at the "castle" having taken the very scenic route through the lovely moorland.  It's a lot nicer than going into Ripon then on A/B roads.

Once there, we entered the wonderful entrance hall and were greeted by wonderfully polite staff whom directed us to the stable block where our woodland trail walk began.

We meet a lovely man, dressed in full country gent attire who sold Lauren a ticket to Santa.  He then told us (via Lauren) that to find Santa Claus we had to follow the path marked out in decorations tied to trees, bushes etc.  All the way along, we kept stopping to see what was hiding (toy reindeers, musical bells, giant tubs of chocolats etc), we knew we were close when we could hear some lovely belly laughs of "Ho Ho Ho".  Suddenly some lovely friendly dogs dressed in red/white/green outfits bounded up to us and led us into the Quoits green where Santa's Grotto could be seen.  Lauren was beside herself with the excitement of it all.  We all went into the small stone grotto and Lauren was quiet for a moment or two whilst she looked in awe.  Santa gave her a present, she said "thank you" and both she and Martha sat on Santa's knee for a photograph.  We then left the grotto and were pointed into the direction of the continuation of the woodland treasure trail.

The estate had made such an effort to make it magical for the children.  Every few yards along the path, they had "treasures" for Lauren to find.  They ranged from tubs of sweets for her to take one from, to bags of carrots where Lauren had to take one and find the reindeer to feed it to.  We had to search for hidden bells in trees to win a prize and take decorations from a box to decorate one of the woodland trees.  The trail ended with a table filled with apples and clementines for the children to help themselves to.  At the end of the walk we bought some refreshments (2 coffees, 1 Warm Juice, Mince Pie and Biscuit) all for £2!  We then went into a lovely warm stable to collect our photograph (now framed & sitting pride of place in Lauren's bedroom), it cost £1.50 and I paid £1 to enter the tombolo and won a Ty doll named "Ginger" which looks like a cross between Lauren & I, but she loves it !!!

We ALL had a lovely couple of hours and cost a fraction of other events that have been advertised but best of all it was so very quiet.  It appeared that most of the other people there were friends/family/workers of the estate and it was all so very friendly.

Later that evening, Peter must have been feeling into the spirit of Christmas as he suggested we both go outside once the girls were asleep and decorate the outside of the house with lovely lights, even icicle ones from the gable end above the front door - it looks wonderful!!!

Saturday 16th December

Ventured into Ripon today to get presents for Lauren, Martha and Peter's.  Feels really good to have had all my family sorted for Christmas - first time ever to have it all finished before Christmas Eve!  I've found it a lot easier this year to manage than previously, the "would like" list has been a great help narrowing down the gift selection.   Lauren had a little tantrum in town which wasn't pleasant but it all stemmed from her being so tired so remedial action was very easy.  We bought Trivial Pursuit 90's Edition for our Christmas Family Board Game as my previous charity shop "bargain" turned out to be a flop!  If you know anyone clever enough to successfully play Trivial Pursuit Genus Edition, please let me know - they can have it!!!

Friday 15th December

The eBay PC fiasco continues...

seller responded to my email about the damages, saying to send it back and he'll repair it and send it back next day.  Personally, I don't think this is acceptable, bearing in mind I'd already spent over £20 calling him on his premium rate number to find out where the PC was.  I don't want to spend over £500 on PC that is repaired!!  Anyway, I've (or rather Peter & I) have had enough, we've raised a Paypal claim to get our money back - it's been over 3 weeks since we paid for the item.  It's our first (and I hope last) really bad eBay experience.

We visited my work colleague and friend today who is moving as her husband has been posted to the South of England.  She gave birth to her son 3 months ago and I haven't been to see them both yet.  The girls and I packed up this morning and drove to Harrogate to see them both.  He is so perfect, he has the tiniest little features and lovely expressions.  I'll miss her when she moves.

We drove home and were housebound again waiting for Parcelforce to re-collect the PC upon our request!

Finished off the day with a really nice Indian takeaway and a bath - yummy!  Martha has fed well today, so am hoping to get a good nights' sleep!

Thursday 14th December

This morning the girls and I attended the Christmas party and the mum & baby/toddler group at church.  I was a bit disappointed that Lauren and Martha were the only ones to have made an effort to get dressed in party clothes - they looked very beautiful and I was so proud of them both.  Lauren tucked into a lovely lunch whilst I helped myself to the adults buffet of lovely french bread, farmhouse pate, mackarel pate, cheese and fruit cake.  After lunch, we made our way into the church, where sang Away in a Manger and See Him Lying on a Bed of Straw - that brought back some fond memories.  After our singing, Santa Claus came in, Lauren went crazy!!!  She was waving like mad to him as he made his way through the parents to the stage area.

Each parent was asked to bring a small present for their children for Santa to hand out.  Lauren's was one of the very last to come out and she approached him very cautiously to collect both hers and Martha's.  Once most of the children had left for the other room, Lauren dragged me over to see him, where she spent nearly 20 minutes chatting to him very happily, thanking him for the teaset and showing him how it works by pouring him a "cup o' tea", she then said "goodbye Santa" about 30 times before we made it out of the church.   All in all, she had a wonderful morning and was still talking about it going to bed tonight!!

Finished off my dental treatments over lunch and I cannot express how much happier I feel for having all the work done.  I don't think it was that expensive either - £220.

My fiasco with buying the new PC through eBay has escalated.  It finally arrived on this afternoon and when Peter opened it, it was all broken.  The USB port cover had snapped off, the graphics card had come out of the motherboard (it's a clear sided case so thank goodness we could see all of this), the hard drive was set in at 45º and there was no power lead!  It's an absolute farce!

Tuesday 11th December

After my trip to the dentist 2 weeks ago, I approached todays' appointment with excitement rather than sheer terror.  I literally bounded up the stairs when he came to collect me, excited by the prospect of getting my teeth back into shape.  He is such a good dentist, he told me everything that was going to happen last time and and it made it so less frightening and I'm convinced his style is the reason I feel so positive about dental treatment now.  Today I had my 2nd extraction and a scale and polish (the only bit that was sore was when he cleaned in between my top middle teeth - ouch!).  They look so much better all ready and when my gums aren't so red, they'll look even better.

Filled with happiness and bravery, I made my next appointment for Thursday, which will see me completing my course of treatment - I am amazed that I've manage to accomplish it all in 3 weeks considering how terrified I was.

After the dentist, I took advantage of Peter's mum watching the girls and popped into Pateley Bridge for my wreath.  I saw the perfect one to match my theme (photos on site) and Jane kindly made me a red bow to compliment.  It is now hanging pride of place on our front door.  I also bought some holly berries and rosehips (I think!) to finish off my festive vases.  In the morning, Lauren & I hung our Christmas cookies on the tree and unfortunately as some broke we had to eat them!!

Also we recieved notification that our new PC has been despatched - 3 weeks after paying for it and following a snotty e-mail from us.  I'm not breathing a sigh of relief until it's arrived and fully functioning - watch this space!!!

Sunday 10th December

We've had a really productive weekend.  On Saturday, Peter got the giant old dining table and chairs out of the big shed and I spent a couple of hours cleaning and waxing it up to look beautiful for our Christmas feast.  It feels so nice to have a proper dining table again, rather than a pine kitchen table pretending to be one!

On Sunday, we all went to our local garden centre armed with our tape measure and carefully selected our tree.  Lauren adored Santa's winter wonderland which was filled head to toe, left to right with as many beautiful animated Santas, reindeers, elves, etc you could imagine.  A complete contrast to last year, when she was terrified of the display!  We left having bought all of our decorations to last a lifetime!

Upon our return home, the girls had a good nap whilst Peter & I went outside wrapped up and in our wellies doing various chores.  I, armed with secataurs, went about the place gathering bits of pine, holly, ivy, anything green basically to create some Christmas vases, I ended up creating 4 vases and 1 garland - I'm quite happy with my first attempt, it has a rustic look which suits the rest of the house!!  I'm not yet brave enough to create a wreath and as my old one has vanished, will be off to our florist, Flourish (they did our wedding flowers) in the morning to buy one.  We then worked together getting the downpipes fitted to the guttering ready for the next batch of storms and Peter fixed my bracket next to the door - I am now the happy owner of a proper hanging basket rather than a sitting basket!!  I really like the idea of putting window boxes around our house, I think it would suit the log cabin look but they are so expensive.  I have a lot of treated timber left from the building work so am pondering either having a go myself or asking our joiner nicely!

Peter and spent the evening, once the girls had settled down, dressing the tree ready for Lauren to see in the morning.

We plan to make gingerbread and biscuit decorations for the tree tomorrow.  As suggested by Jan, I have listed the recipes below - happy baking!!!

Christmas Biscuits

Ingredients:

For biscuits:
350g (12 oz) plain flour, plus extra for rolling
110g (4 oz) caster sugar
225g (8 oz) butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
salt

For icing:
About 450g (1 lb) icing sugar

Instructions:

Put the flour, sugar and a pinch of salt into a food processor then add butter and vanilla extract. Pulse until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Pulse again to bring it together. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes. (If you don't have a food processor, you can of course do this by hand).

Roll the dough out to about ¼ inch thick and stamp out biscuits using cutters. Place on baking sheets (you may have to chill again for 15 minutes of so). If you are going to hang the cookies on the tree, make small holes at the top of each shape with a plastic drinking straw. Bake at 350F (180C, Gas Mark 4) for 12-15 minutes. Remove and leave briefly on trays before transferring to a wire rack to cool.

Use boiling water to make up the icing. Decorate as appropriate.

Christmas recipe makes: 2 dozen
Calories per biscuit: 125
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Suitable for freezing at end of step 5.

Gingerbread Tree Decorations

Ingredients:

  • flour, plain white 350 g (12 oz)
  • bicarbonate of soda, 5 ml (1 tsp)
  • ginger, ground 30 ml (2 tbsp)
  • cinnamon, ground 15 ml (1 tbsp)
  • cloves, ground 2.5 ml (0.5 tsp)
  • butter, 125 g (4 oz)
  • sugar, soft light brown 175 g (6 oz)
  • golden syrup 60 ml (4 tbsp)
  • egg, 1

Icing:

  • egg white, 1
  • icing sugar, sifted
  • food coloring

Instructions:

1.       Blend the butter with a mixture of the spices, bicarbonate of soda and flour. Do this until it is breadcrumb like and then mix in the sugar.

2.       Beat an egg into slightly warmed syrup and pour into the mixture from step 1, mixing till it becomes a soft dough. Then knead until smooth.

3.       Make a 5mm (¼ inch) thick dough layer on a floured surface and cut out biscuit shapes using various cutters. Pierce a hole in each one for putting ribbon through later on, for hanging.

4.       Put two non-stick baking sheets on two baking trays.

5.       Place the various shaped cut outs onto the baking sheets and bake at 190 degrees centigrade (375 F) until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Allow to cool and harden for about 10 minutes before placing on a wire rack till cold.

6.       For the icing add sifted icing sugar to a beaten egg until stiff enough for piping. Add colourings if necessary to brighten up the decorations.

7.       Put icing patterns of your choice on the biscuits. After allowing the biscuits to dry, put ribbons through the biscuit holes, ready for hanging on a Christmas tree.

Friday 8 December

Whoops!  I've not written my blog all week - kind of sums up how manic it has been!

I've been waiting most of the week for our numerous eBay deliveries to arrive.  I am now the proud owner of:-

8 Santa hat chair covers (I know they are crass but a lot cheaper than "proper" chair covers at £30 a go!)
8 LED Angel Spotlights for my car
1 Roof Bar (on which to mount above)
1 Nudge Bar (on which to mount spots)
1 "Ideal Home" CD (to design my house further)

I'm still waiting for our new PC to arrive.  I have spoken with the seller again today and he "promised" that it would arrive by Saturday (this was following the "promise to arrive by Friday" conversation").  Basically, it looks like he's selling the PC, getting the money and using that to purchase the parts with which to build the PC - quite a crap way to run a business and judging from his feedback and conversation, it might not last much longer if he doesn't do some serious re-wording on his auctions.

Martha got weighed again on Thursday and is now 16lbs 13oz - she's put on nearly 2lbs in the 3 weeks I've been weaning her.  She loves food so much, it's wonderful to see.

Lauren is still very Santa Claus mad, but I'm enjoying seeing her so excited and acting like a little girl!  Earlier this week she told me she "loved me much" for the first time, my heart melted - I was so very happy.  Give it a few months/years, I'm sure the opposite will come out!!

I've been in the wars this week with a ton of cuts, burns and bruises!  Domestication is hazardous to health!!!

Sunday 3 December

Wow!  What a weekend.  It has been non stop fun.

On Saturday, we took Lauren to RHS Harlow Carr's Family Christmas Event to see Santa Claus arrive by helicopter then get his sleigh pulled along by a tractor - she loved every second.  They had a lot of things for us to do.  We went to the Study Centre and made some lovely Christmas crafts.  Lauren & I first made a festive hanging decoration with cinnamon, dried chilis and orange slices.   We then decorated a plant pot with leaves and planted 3 crocus bulbs.  I asked Lauren who this should be for and she decided to give it to Martha - we'll all have fun watching the crocus develop and bloom.

The event must bring out the best in Harrogate, it was full of very well dressed and groomed families of which each generation called the other "mummy", "daddy" etc.  Peter & I enjoyed fighting our way amongst the full length winter coats and tweed jackets to get prime "Santa viewing"  platform - he was so close we could nearly touch him!!  We did try to queue up to see him in his grotto but so did everyone else so we gave up after 30 minutes and decided to go another day.  Next year, we have a cunning plan as to how to see him first in his Grotto!!

Sunday was spent doing chores which was very pleasant and argument free!, I managed to get loads of ironing done and Peter made some electrical repairs for which I am very grateful.  Peter cooked our Sunday dinner of pot roast beef with a gorgeous red wine and onion gravy.  Unfortunately, the joint was supermarket bought and as such wasn't the best. We'll have it again but with our nice butcher bought joint.

On a friend's advice, I have been trying Aloe Vera gel on Lauren's ezcema - it has worked wonderfully.  Thank you Susan and Banana Boat

STOP PRESS:

Update on feedback:-

Pampers - Got to send broken nappies and they are sending me some vouchers for the inconvenience
Milupa Aptimil - Gave them postive feedback and they have thanked me and are sending a teddy bear!

Just shows it's worth giving companies feedback!

Thursday 30 November

We breathed a big sigh of relief today - Lauren's lumbar x-ray came back as normal.  We still don't know what is causing her pain but it's looking more likely to be an soft tissue injury.

Bought some Santa Claus hat seat covers for Christmas today and a new corded telephone from eBay.  Still haven't received our new all singing, all dancing gaming PC but I'm sure it will arrive within days (postive thinking, positive thinking!).

Thankfully we have now all recovered from the nasty bug that was doing the rounds so today has been back to normal for us all.

I wrote two letters today, one to Pampers and one to Huggies.  The Pampers one saying how much I liked their nappies but recent my purchases haven't been up to the same standards with tags ripping off and seaming coming apart leaving Lauren covered in gel crystals in the morning.  The Huggies was was enquiring whether they made any "sensitive" nappies as both Lauren & Martha are allergic to them.  Watch this space and I'll let you know what happens.
