Saturday 29th September

Don't ever let me check your lottery ticket!!  We received an e-mail from National Lottery subject "Exciting news about your ticket!", clicked and went into our account to discover we'd won £7.90!  Whoops!

Today was spent trying to get the house in order after a week of being out and about with the show etc.  I bought myself a layered scented candle which I decided to light and it smells divine!  A friend came up to collect a drill and we got chatting about rental properties (he has several) and how much commission agents charge for doing not a lot!  He said one of his contacts was looking for a house but none of our friend's properties are available so I told him ours was - fingers crossed we might get a new tenant and bypass the agent so we can keep more money for ourselves!

Peter is very worried about Martha's face and it scarring.  It makes me feel so upset to know that he can see how bad it is too and it's not just me being "over-sensitive".  I hope that it will clear up more in the next few days so we get a better idea of what it'll be like.

I sliced a big lump of the top of my thumb this evening dicing swede - ouch!!

Friday 28th September

OMG - Martha's face looks even worse this morning and I feel so guilty (as does Lauren I suspect, who was being very very nice to her this morning).  Overnight the weeping wound has dried and it is now more apparent the damage Lauren has done.  I am now really worried that it's going to scar.

After dropping Lauren off at playgroup, Martha & I drove into Pateley Bridge to return library books, buy "Nidderdale Herald" and extra milk.  On our way back to the car, I was delighted to discover a bag emblazoned with "Free Book" and instantly recognised the Bookcrossing logo!  We are now the proud temporary owners of "The Universe" - Lauren & I have already enjoyed looking at it together and Peter's had a flick through himself when he got home.

We collected Peter from Leeds/Bradford Airport at teatime and drove to Murgatroyds for a fish and chip dinner in the restaurant.  I'm not sure if it's the type of clientele that the place attracts but Lauren & Martha get huge amounts of attention from the fellow diners in there that they both enjoy enormously!!

Bought loads of tickets for tonights Euromillions with my previous lucky win - I didn't win a thing - bah humbug!! SadBaring teeth

Thursday 27th September

Lauren was very clingy this morning and I had to stay a bit longer at playgroup with her.  I thought I'd left her playing happily with her best friend when as I was jumping back into the car, the playleader came out and told me that she was distressed and had just burst into tears.  I waited outside whilst her "favourite" playleader comforted her and thankfully she calmed down.  This should have been a sign of things to come - more later.

I took my friend Julie (and Phoebe) along to the mother and toddler group this morning for the first time.  She was really impressed at how friendly it was and how much Phoebe enjoyed it.  I think Martha liked it even more having a friend to cause mischief with!!  We popped into church on the way back to playgroup and have agreed to go to the family service together this Sunday which is taking place at Lauren & Emma's future school as part of the "Back to Church Sunday" program.

I collected a very happy Lauren who seemed to have forgotten the mornings upset - I asked her about it later and she told me several things had made her cry ranging from "a big bang" to "I didn't know you'd gone".  I think the latter might be more understandable although I did say goodbye and give her a kiss - I think she just didn't think I'd go.  This was the first time she's really been upset with me going and suspect it's something to do with tiredness/general rundown feeling.

What happened in the afternoon was awful.  Lauren was playing with a jigsaw on the coffee table and Martha tried to join in (as usual).  Lauren was really mean to her and squashed Martha's hand (that was holding a jigsaw piece) with all of her weight. Obviously Martha cried and came running to me.  I comforted Martha and told Lauren off for hurting her.  A few minutes passed when Martha decided to go near Lauren again, before I could do anything, Lauren had nipped/scratched/gouged Martha's cheek right below her eye and she had blood pouring everywhere.  Martha was screaming, Lauren was screaming, I shouted (she was going back for seconds), it was bedlam.  I tried to clean it up with cotton wool and antiseptic wash but I can't believe how deep it is.  It didn't stop bleeding for nearly 20 minutes and she looks a right mess - I'm so worried that it will scar.

Wednesday 26th September

I have been elected onto the Playgroup Management Committee and I've been asked to become Secretary - going to have a think about it and see what's involved at the next committee meeting so will make a firm decision then.

We dropped Peter off at the airport this this afternoon as he is off to the Isle of Man until Friday evening for work.  We all enjoyed a lunch at the Wellington Inn, Darley before going home to pack his bags.

I've been made 2 job offers (not playgroup committee either!) in the last few days which is very exciting!  One was from someone I met at the show on Monday (a friend of a friend) who is looking for someone at his stock brokers however it's in Leeds which is just too far for me to travel to on a part time basis.  The other job was offered this morning at our local garage working in the workshop!!  I would LOVE to do this but until Martha is at playgroup next year, I'm not really in a position to do anything.  The job isn't advertised or really available, he thought I would enjoy it, so I hope the garage owner can wait until next year when I can do it for a couple of hours every morning.  It's such a contrast from what I used to do but I think that it'd be great getting paid for doing a hobby and being only 5 minutes walk from playgroup!!

Isn't it funny that when you desperately want a new jobm, nothing is around, yet when you're not looking they come all at once!!

I uploaded some photos today into the September album, from the show of us getting it all ready and taking it down.  I'm going to start taking some more again and will keep uploading them.

Tuesday 25th September

Lauren was back at playgroup this morning, so after dropping her off, Martha & I met up with Peter at the showground to help with the mammoth clear up operation.  If only it took as long to set up as it does to take down!!  Martha and I left just before 1200 to collect Lauren who had been very busy model making for us all.  I recieved a tractor, Peter was given a boat (this was brilliant and I'll get some photos on here in the next few days) and Martha received a "pretend" coat-hanger (?!?!?) which Lauren was very proud of it was a margarine tub with a breadstick carton sticking out of it - she must have thought Martha needed one!!

Tonight I was yet again made to look like a numpty by Lauren.  I was reading them both a bedtime story about a little bear who couldn't sleep and it involved at the end the moon and stars.  Lauren has a poster on the ceiling above her bed that I bought from eBay (look here) a while ago that is really good and where the downlighter is, it looks like a full moon when the lounge lights are on.  I turned her reading light off and asked the girls to look at the moon and stars like Little Bear did in the story, Lauren's reply..."it's not real Martha, it's just a poster mum, it's the roof, not outside" - that's me told then!

Anyway if anyone is thinking of buying stick on glow-in-the-dark stars, I would seriously recommend one of these posters, alright I know that it's not real (thank you Lauren) but it looks really good and is amazing that it gives the effect that they are moving.  I'd love to have the company come and do my entire bedroom ceiling (they can do that you know!)!!

Organised Mum diaries start from September - please have a look through my affilliate link.

Monday 24th September

Peter & I got up around 0615 and got ourselves ready.  I then gently woke the girls at 0650 and Lauren got herself dressed in the clothes she'd picked out the night before, pink long-sleeved top, jodphurs and tights, Martha got dressed in her warm clothes and we served them both breakfast.

Sadly, the weather wasn't on our side and hadn't stopped raining all night so we expected the showfield to be a bit muddy!  The girls were dressed in their waterproofs so were very happy (as we were too!) and we drove down to the showfield.  We arrived at about 0730 and started to help those people who arrived that morning set up (it's very difficult to erect a gazebo by yourself in howling wind and sideways rain!!).  Thankfully the adverse weather didn't put people off any by mid morning there was a steady stream of visitors which didn't ease until late afternoon when people started to leave.  It was great to see the show still attracted thousands as obviously due to Foot & Mouth restrictions, we had no livestock which is the main element of the show.  One of the late attractions to fill the spaces left by the cattle was a children's "lead your pet" parade - one brave girl brought along her cat (on a special cat lead) and she received a wonderful round of applause for her sheer determination in controlling the cat!  I hope they make it a regular, it was really fun to watch!  Lauren watched spellbound during the horse judging and was giddy when the show-jumping kicked off late afternoon.  Martha too was keen on the horses although I'm not sure if it's due to Lauren's reaction or more worryingly she is just as interested in them - it could be very expensive not to mention hard-work!!  I bought some heathers and winter pansies to plant in planters to make our rented house look a bit more loved than it is now.

We left for home around 1800 after a very, very long day especially for the girls who enjoyed the day thoroughally.  Lauren first attended the show when she was only a couple of weeks old and it's lovely to see her enjoy more each year.  She enjoyed helping us set up this year so I think she'll be involved for a long time yet!!

Sunday 23rd September

Peter left early to finish getting the showground ready for tomorrow.  I quickly baked some chocolate muffins and took them down whilst they were still warm for us all to enjoy before the girls and I helped him and the others.  Lauren & Martha were really good girls and were still enjoying the novelty of empty marquees so I managed to help where I could.

We decided to have an Indian takeaway and we all went to bed early in preparation for our early start the next day - Lauren was very excited at the prospect of seeing the horses.

Saturday 22nd September

Well Stuart & Tractor have survived the night - much to Peter & I's relief!!  Lauren was very excited when she woke up this morning and left her bedroom, realised she'd not seen the fish and ran back in, shouting "morning fish".  I asked if she could remember their names, which she could - she then decided that she didn't like their names, so I asked what she'd like to call them instead, reply "Plip and Plop" - I laughed so hard I was crying and I'm doing it again writing this (I'd forgotten to tell Peter what she'd said).  Thankfully she had a change of heart and Stuart & Tractor have kept their names.  I suppose it could be worse, we could have got her dogs and she'd called them Plip and Plop - can you imagine me walking them and calling their names?? I'd be carted off!!

We had a day in the house whilst Peter worked at the showfield with his father digging trenches for electrical cables in the rain - poor things, although this is something up until this year I did !!  I'm going to be there tomorrow so I expect to be doing some other muddy job, but strangely I enjoy it!!!

This afternoon I took Lauren & Martha to their friend, Alexandra's, birthday party.  Alexandra is the vicar's (who married us. Sisters, you may remember him) daughter and her mum is the playgroup chair and bc (before children) used to be a primary teacher (well English equivalent which I think is Key Stage something!).  Anyway, her training shone through and the children had a brilliant time pretending to be on a ship (playing action game), crossing islands (adapted musical chairs), treking through the forest avoiding bears (treasure hunt) before arriving at the castle (another action/running around game).  It was great fun and Lauren got more into it as we progressed.  Alison had timed everything to perfection, with the party ending at exactly the time specified without any rushing or feeling that something was missed!  In my old job, I had to do exactly the same but with adults, I don't think I could ever organise children in that way - I wish I could!!!!  We played parachute games, pass the parcel and the girls had a lovely birthday tea whilst the parents enjoyed homemade banana cake and chocolatey squares.

We arrived home, bathed the girls instantly (Martha had somehow climbed into a disused fireplace at the village hall which was still sooty!) and found Peter had cooked us a lovely dinner of Roast Beef, potatoes and veg.  Lauren fell asleep before Martha (a first!) and Peter & I enjoyed some quiet, child-free time watching TV.  Having an earlyish night so we can get up and out early tomorrow.

Friday 21st September

I have not been on the PC in the evening all this week hence the lack of blog entries - one simple reason...Harry Potter!

The final page has now been read and I can't believe it's all over!  I'm not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it/finished it but all I will say is "what an amazing finale!".   I had a few inklings as to what may happen in this book which turned out to be correct but I was blown away by a lot of the incidents/revelations.  I can't imagine what the movie will be like!!!

Other things that have happened this week...

Monday - Lauren went to playgroup and Martha and I went to our Ripon house to hoover ready for the carpet to be fitted.  After lunch, the 3 of us drove over to inspect and lay dust sheets over the new carpet.  I'm really impressed with our choice and it makes the living room look really cosy - bad point is that our fireplace now looks a bit weird and I'm trying to persuade Peter to put a nice chunky surround in to finish the room off properly.

Tuesday - Ummm - can't remember!  Must have been fun!!!  Oh I remember now, I cleaned all the wooden floors whilst Peter's mum watched the girls for an hour - told you it was fun!!

Wednesday - Had Ripon house valued £185k for quick sale but agent suggests £190 if we're not in a rush - excellent result!!  Lauren & I made 2 loaves of Banana Bread (let me know if you want the recipe!), one for us to eat and the other for Lauren to take to playgroup.

Thursday - I had my final appointment with my consultant.  Diagnosis, I have low level pain niggles which could be a number of things (sadly older age and excess baggage could be one of the causes!!), but he believes that most of the pain is now psychological as a result of the accident.  I felt like I was a nutter or worse hypochondriac (sisters - you were nearly right!!), but he said it's quite common after Post Traumatic Stress where injury did occur and EMDR has been used.  EMDR is a wonderful new treatment that I can honestly say has changed my life and brought me back to nearly the old me however, it is not yet know how it can be used to treat the physical connections our mind/body makes in relation to the event.  I think for me now, I just have to put it all behind and focus on the future and realise that when I ache, puff up etc, it is probably me getting older rather than the old crash injuries flaring up.  I'll be glad now when the whole case is over and I don't need to think about it at all.

Friday - Well today has been a fun day, despite of the atrocious weather!!  I dressed the girls up for the downpour and we headed to playgroup.  Martha looked adorable in her wellies, especially as her jeans were tucked in really tight (a proper mini-me!!), she also had on her raincoat that Amanda bought for her birthday - she got comments galore, so I've decided that will be her "outfit" for Nidderdale Show on Monday.  Leading me nicely onto the afternoon's activity where we all trundled to the showground to help set up.  The girls loved playing in the marquees and I felt useful!  Lauren Martha & I walked up to the Pet Shop on the High Street where we purchased a fish tank and some goldfish food.  Bizarre you may think but we had a cunning plan!!  The fair comes a few days before showday and they must be the only one that still have goldfish as prizes.  Lauren & I decided to rescue one and bring him home to look after.  After tea, we all went down into Pateley and and spent a fortune "winning" a teddy bear each for the girls(you know the "everyone's a winner" stalls) before we went to the "hook a duck" stall to "win" our fish.  Lauren chose her fish and she promptly named him Stuart - "welcome to the Fort Family"!!  Wandering around I decided that we should get another one as I didn't want Stuart getting lonely so we won another one which Lauren named "Tractor" ?!?  Peter & I discussed it with Lauren and tried to change it to Flipper but then I felt bad about hijacking her name because it didn't "conform" to goldfish naming protocols or something, so "Welcome to the Fort Family Tractor!"  There was a horrid moment on the stall when she handed me a goldfish and I asked her for another one that Lauren had chosen herself - the woman accidently (obviously) dropped the goldfish (in bag) that she first selected.  I'm always uncomfortable seeing fish flapping out of water (isn't everyone?) and was then even more shocked when in her panic to find it, she nearly stood on him/her - by nearly, I mean the fish was actually under her boot but thankfully in the gap in front of her heel - it was horrible, especially with loads of children looking over the stall seeing it all unfold - I felt dreadful, anyway, the goldfish was thankfully put back into his bag and given some clean water to swim in - phew!!!

Lauren's closing words tonight "I love you fish".

Oh almost forgot!  I won £26 on a National Lottery online scratchcard - I hardly ever play but we had £1 left over after buying Euromillions - Hurrah!!!

Sunday 16th September

Spent the day again at the other house.  Peter painted the bathroom ceiling whilst I alternated between entertaining the girls, making drinks, talking to neighbours, sweeping floors, applying filler to walls and cleaning out about 4 months worth of ash from the fire - all without the hoover (we forgot it!!).

The girls have been so good in the house, there's nothing in there so we brought their megablocks and a couple of balls to keep them occupied.  I couldn't let them into the garden as a) it was too overgrown, b) not sure if there is dog poo and c) think there might be biting ants!

Before we drove to the house, we visited Focus and bought the cheapest wallpaper we could find just to make the walls look better -200 year old walls can be appealing but the bumps are probably best hidden whilst trying to get people interested!!  We left armed with 22 rolls, tons of paste and dustsheets to cover our soon to arrive new carpet!!

We left around 1530h and got our house straightened up for Peter's friend Mark who's coming to stay the night on his way up to Scotland for work next week.  Peter is off to Scotland next week too but is covering Motherwell, Stirling, Perth and Dundee.

Saturday 15th September

We spent the whole day at the other house today stripping wallpaper in preparation for the decorators who will hopefully be coming next week.  We treated a damp patch on the bathroom ceiling where a roof tile had come off and water leaked in.  Thankfully the roof has been repaired but we've not been able to get access to make good the decoration until now.  We popped into the carpet shop on the way home and bought a carpet for the lounge which was brilliantly (for us!) incorrectly priced so we've got a load of good carpet with enough offcut (about 9ft) to do somewhere else (perhaps our own house when we get upstairs done!).  As the house is vacant, the carpet fitters can come on Monday which is brilliant as otherwise we'd have had to wait until October!!  I'm thinking of planting up some old Belfast sinks we have to make the back of the house (what people see first) more appealing.   The tenants haven't maintained this either and it's all nettles and looks miserable too!

It's going to look really good when we're finished - someone has to want to rent or buy it!!!

Friday 14 September

After Lauren finished playgroup, we headed home for a quick lunch then back to the other house to meet an Estate Agent to value it for sale.  I don't think we really want to sell it just now, but it's worth knowing how much it's worth and if people are interested.  If it does sell (it hasn't sold the last 2 occassions!) then we plan to buy another property, probably smaller and closer to home.  Fingers crossed we get some more tenants that hopefully will be ok!!

I'm glad it's Friday!!!

Thursday 14th September

Decided to go to the Mother & Toddler group at church this morning after dropping Lauren off at Playgroup.  Everyone was so surprised at the changes in Martha, and I was surprised to see the changes in all the other little ones as well.  It's amazing how much they develop in only 6-8 weeks!  Martha is displaying more of her personality now and isn't afraid of climbing, falling, sliding down or other children.  She loves being with other children and is happiest when she can "look after" younger children than herself.  She sits for a long time just looking at babies and stroking their hands and heads - she enjoys making funny noises trying to get them to laugh!

I made a big decision today to put myself forward to be on the Playgroup Management Committee.  It's so funny how my life has changed, or in particular what is seen as "big decisions" nowadays!!  I spoke with the Chair, who already had my name down on her list to approach so it looks like it shouldn't be an issue (at least I hope not!).  I'm really looking forward to doing something proactive again and using my brain for "adult" activities.  I think this is just the kind of thing I need, with Lauren being at playgroup for another 2 years (what with her birthday being 2 Sept), and Martha joining next year, I have a vested interest to make sure that  the playgroup is successful.  The AGM is next week so I will find out fairly soon if I've been successful! Smile

Tuesday 11th September

This afternoon we received the phone call every landlord hates to get..."your tenants have left!".  Both ourselves and the agent were really surprised, it seems that the tenants moved out at least 2 weeks ago but didn't let anyone know!  The house isn't too bad, a bit dirty and looking unloved but what we're really mad about is that they taken the grill pan, Sky box and all the curtain rings (metal ones and wooden ones!)!!

The garden is an absolute jungle and is very sad to look at, especially when I know how beautiful a garden it should be.  We're having to get cleaners and gardeners in (thankfully out of tenants deposit) to make the place tidy again.  We've decided to take the opportunity to spruce a few rooms up and sadly we've made the decision to carpet over the solid Douglas Pine floor as it's not been cleaned let alone maintained and looks such a state.  We just don't have the time (or energy) at the moment to re-sand, wax and seal it all again.

Sunday 9th September

Decided to have a really lazy Sunday and just stay around here.  I tackled the laundry mountain, Peter did his paperwork, Lauren did some crafts (with me) and Martha wandered around happily inspecting everything she could see for about 30 seconds at a time!

Haven't decided what to make for dinner, we've been gutsy today and opened a chocolate orange (buy one get one free at Morrisons!) to share.  Lauren and Martha LOVE chocolate orange - doesn't everyone?!?

Just listening to music just now (The Eagles - Hotel California) and feeling nice and relaxed.  Now where are the girls and Peter??  Ah, that's right Martha's napping and Lauren's outside with Peter - I'm off to get a hot coffee whilst I can!!!!

Hope everyone had a nice weekend!

Saturday 8th September

Took the girls out into Ripon first thing to buy Chloe her birthday present and collect a cake for Susan.  We went fairly early as it's just so much easier.  We got everything we needed really quickly and went into Boots to buy the girls some new toothpaste and toothbrushes.  I don't like the fact that you can get strawberry etc flavour toothpaste, it seems to go against my idea of a clean mouth so am pleased that Colgate Smiles exist!!

We drove home and let the girls have a little nap in readiness for the party.  Lauren was very excited as Chloe was having a "disco" party.  She got all dressed up in sparkly black skirt and top which she chose herself. We then made her hair pretty with nearly every hair accessory she owns!!  She looked adorable!!

We arrived at the hall for the party a bit early so I could help Susan prepare and all the girls had great fun dancing with the disco ball lighting the hall.  Before long the first guests arrived and our girls became shy, I think they're at the age where they nervous with groups of other children (does that ever end??).  They settled down not long afterwards and started to enjoy themselves again.  Lauren got Martin dancing which I don't think has ever been seen in public before - well done Lauren!!!  Martha made everyone laugh as usual but especially when she found a napkin and started dusting the floor!!

Friday 7th September

After dropping Lauren off at playgroup Martha and I visited Susan and Macey.  Macey was napping but we had a really nice morning together.  It has been such a long time since we spent time together, I'd forgotten how nice it was.  We left late morning to collect Lauren from playgroup where she had made a really good boat that she wants to play with in the bath.  She said goodbye to her friend Emma who is on holiday for a fortnight and we headed home.  Peter needed to go into Pateley when he got back from work so decided to make our regular Friday trip with him.  Once there, Lauren and I walked to the library whilst Martha and Peter surveyed the showground ready for Sunday Great Milk Race.  We then all went to the park and enjoyed the lovely warm afternoon sunshine and an ice-lolly - it was then I realised that I had left Martha's change bag at Susan's that morning so we drove up to collect it as it isn't far.  Once there, Susan was just returning from her shopping trip for Chloes' birthday party the next afternoon and was eager to show me what she'd bought (it's so easy to go mad isn't it?!?!).  Before our children arrived, Susan, Martin, Peter & I spent nearly every evening together and had a good laugh!  We decided since all the children were in good form and we were there, we'd have dinner together and perhaps a game of Hearts!  We enjoyed an Indian takeaway whilst the girls played but didn't manage the card game, but we were so pleased to have actually managed a meal together in years!!

Thursday 06 September

I didn't get to bed last night until 2am mainly due to the fact I can never settle when Peter's away.  I then didn't sleep too well, beforehand I heard that Luciano Pavarottis' health had deteriorated and his family and friends were at his bedside.  I fell to sleep with a heavy heart, knowing that I was likely to awake to the news of his passing.

There are few "celebrities" that I really admire and feel sad knowing that one day they will no longer make us laugh, cry, or feel alive with their talent...Pavarotti was one of those for me.  I can listen to his voice every day, it never loses its spellbinding clarity and depth.  You can hear his every faultless note filled with such emotion that you are hard pushed not to feel something powerful yourself.  In respect, Lauren, Martha and I listened to him during the day.

RIP Luciano Pavarotti - you will be missed.

Wednesday 5th September

º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º Happy Birthday Mum!! º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º

I was looking forward to spending the day with Lauren today and we've had a really nice day.  After all the party preps and the party itself, the house is looking a tad neglected and as we were expecting visitors both morning and afternoon I thought I'd better tackle it.  It's amazing how much you can accomplish when a) you're motivated, b) your children are not only cooperative but helping to tidy and c) when everything has a place!!

The first visitor of the day was Louise who was dropping off Lauren's birthday present on her way to Darley Mill Centre with her mum.  Lauren was thrilled to receive a lovely classic bedtime story book and Noddy pyjamas.  Louise didn't stop for long so when she left, we did the finishing touches like putting my treat from yesterday, 2 bouquets of lilies in vases and straightening the sofas.  Before long, Julie arrived with Emma and Phoebe from playgroup to join us for lunch.  It was a lovely experience to sit down with another adult who I still don't know very well and just talk.  I'm enjoying expanding (ever so slightly!) my circle of friends and making efforts to strengthen the few friendships that I already have.  On the note, as Julie and I were getting the girls in her car to drop me off to collect my car, my friend Susan popped in to drop off an invitation for Chloe's birthday disco on Saturday teatime.  I'm really looking forward to it and I know that Lauren especially will enjoy the disco!  Unfortunately as I had to pick up the car, we couldn't chat for long but have arranged to go to her house tomorrow morning after dropping Lauren off.  Once we collected the car, Julie and I enjoyed a cup of tea and yummy grown up biscuits whilst the girls played then started to squabble so we realised that it was time to finish our afternoon!!  Martha went straight to sleep as usual and Lauren went to bed at a reasonable time for which I am so grateful as Peter is away until tomorrow!!

As I'm on my own, I'm going to watch an interesting documentary that my sister Jan has sent me about a boy with a past life.  Here's the link in case any other paranormal fans want to watch....LINK
